Art on the Ile began in 2022 with the goal to enrich the Grosse Ile community at large by integrating art into public spaces on Macomb Street, our business community. Grosse Ile Township, in coordination with the Downtown Development Authority, believes that art in a public setting is vital to establishing an inspired and thriving community. Art on the Ile hopes to create an inspired environment for residents, while also encouraging visitors to experience what Grosse Ile has to offer.
Born in New York City, Camilo moved to Detroit at the age of 10. At this time, he had developed a fascination with 60s and 70s era sports cars that were built in the Motor City. After graduating from Detroit’s prestigious design school Center for Creative Studies in 1985, Camilo was hired by Ford Design Center in Dearborn Michigan. After 15 years of working at Ford and working for several automotive design studios, Camilo eventually re-designed the classic Ford GT in 2002. The mural on Macomb will reflect Grosse Ile’s automotive history, which was once home to automotive pioneers Henry Ford, Ransom E. Olds, John Kelsey and Charles & William Fisher.
Budding from a long family history of visual artists, Jesse Kassel earned a Bachelor Degree in Fine Arts with a focus in illustration and has since been exploring various creative outlets. Since earning his degree, the Detroit-based artist has his work displayed across the Metro-Detroit area and the world. Noted for his creative renderings of maps, the DDA has commissioned Kassel to paint a map of Grosse Ile. The mural will highlight the notable locations of the Island, from the beauty of Grosse Ile’s twelve islands, open spaces and farms to its churches, clubs and businesses.
Over the past 20 years, Stanton has developed a unique visual language informed by historic layers, mythology, and universal symbols. Employing these elements, he seeks to draw parallels between past narratives and contemporary human challenges like environmental conservation. The expression of this idea manifests in different mediums including mosaic, animation and most notably, murals. As of today, he has created over 60 public artworks in 25 cities across 16 countries. Notable project partners include the Albright Knox Museum, The World Trade Center, The US Embassy to Italy and the Atlantic Magazine. The DDA is working with Stanton to create a nautical themed mural to reflect Grosse Ile’s history of as a destination for boaters.

Economic Enhancement Strategy
The Grosse Ile Township Downtown Development Authority (DDA) was established in 1992 as a tool to promote economic growth and
development within the Macomb Street
business district. Under State Law, the DDA may capture tax increment revenues and expend funds toward economic development-related initiatives within the DDA District boundaries.
DDA TIF Plan
The Downtown Development Authority was first conceived in 1991 as a result of Mike Johnson's desire to develop a more viable downtown district on Macomb Street, the heart of Grosse lle's business district. In 1992 Supervisor Bruce Sells appointed the first board of the DDA.
The purpose of DDA is to attract people to Macomb Street. The DDA looks forward to Macomb being the place to walk, gather as a community, or simply visit.
Facade Improvement Grant
The Grosse Ile Township Downtown Development Authority (DDA) was created to
grow, strengthen & promote the economic health and vitality of our downtown business
district on Macomb Street, while generating a greater connection with our residents and
island guests. The purpose of the DDA is to attract people and businesses to Macomb
Street.
Our Grant program provides funding to owners of new businesses moving to the DDA
District or existing businesses that expand or improve their current presence within the
district.
A maximum of $5,000.00 will be awarded to Grant Recipients.
